Newspaper analysis
Unit 6 by Cassidy Nicholas
The sun vs. the times magazine

Each newspaper has its own profile the sun and times are a good example of popular but very different newspapers this is due to the different codes and conventions and the profile of each audience. Both magazines attract abc1c2this is a broad audience. Due to the profiles and social classification they fit into different section of this classification, for example the times attracts business class and the sun attracts working class this allows each newspaper to have its own design. Each newspaper has its own semiotics this is how we interpret what our eyes see for example we register red danger, love or Christmas.  In newspapers Semitics is how we view the content of the newspaper, if we are rushing through the newspaper to find our favorite stories we will look out for said signs such as if were looking for nerd weekly issue in the newspaper well look out for glasses as they are a sign of nerds.

Semiotics has both positive connotations and denotations, connotations are what we think when we see glasses we see an intelligent human maybe doing complicated math’s on a big board and denotations are the realistic approach, as such he is wearing glasses because he has poor vision e.g. The semiotics of magazines is relating images to text when you see an image in the newspaper you expect it to relate to text on the newspaper. In addition you relate the color of the sun to be a tabloid newspaper and the times a broad sheet  this is due to the color and layout of each newspaper.

What are codes and conventions:
Codes and convection are how we categories and expect things such as newspapers and magazines to look and feel. For example we know when looking at a newspaper that’s it’s a newspaper due to the sizing of newspapers the type of paper and feel; we can go more in depth and say we can tell the difference between the sun and the times looking at just the layout of these two newspapers.
The times generally has a lot writing with one large photo and a bunch of smaller photos for other articles inside to try get your attention, another way they try and get your attention is using what called the splash this is the main story at the front
of the newspaper.

The times uses the splash and then straight away jumps in to telling you about its main heading, The sun gives you a big splash and insight into their other story using only pictures and sub headings to draw you in there is minimal writing that stands out by being big and bold rather then having lots of information.
In conclusion codes and conventions are what your audience expects to see and how they expect to see it, the sun audience is target to have very little spare time so they use a lot of illustrative photos and little writing to suit their target audience needs. The times targets people that travel to work by train and have to sit and wait for a while having one big image per page and a lot of writing.
Another code and convention is the layout of magazines do they have lots of cross headings or do they use a lot of by-lines are they tabloid or are they a broad sheet.

This article is created for the times taken from amateur garden i made pro garden using their profile i used their general layout bright images each with their own caption about each picture and why they should continue to read.
Typically the times readers have a lot of free time maybe they get the train a lot and wait around for a while enough time to read a whole document, using the captions to intrigue them and convince them to read their stories over other stories. I in corporate this into my magazines using each audience profile to create this magazine for the times audience.

TV today was made from the sun and their target audience they are generally fused and have little time to read so they need big bold letters to see and understand why they should use their time to read inside. The sun is known to be read by people with limited time that are not interested in the politics and news but are interested in reality and the drama side of the news such as the famous etc.

I created these mood boards using the two newspapers audience class-action, from this I found what each audience classification liked to read and made a mood board from these magazines.
Creating these mood boards allowed me to get a better understanding of each audience profile and what these profiles say about the layout and design of each magazine.

The knowledge i gained is as so; The times likes lots of small print extra information as well as their heading and generally prefers to have one main picture, it also has very sophisticated content. On the other hand the sun prefers to have bright big and bold information everywhere, with lots of images and bold background colors.
